Augmented Reality: A Novel Approach for Navigating In Panorama-Based Virtual Environments (PBVE)

This paper presents a novel approach for navigating in a Panorama-Based Virtual Environment (PBVE). A PBVE was constructed for the arbitrary view synthesis when navigating. Uses can interact with PBVE through augmented 3D graphic objects. Unlike traditional imagebased virtual environment (VE) systems in which the functions of presenting 3D geometry and human-system interaction are very limited, the proposed PBVE system, utilizing augmented reality technology, enables users to interactively present 3D geometry, therefore significantly increasing the HCI ability and eliminating the gap between passive planer navigation and human-VE interactive threedimensional navigation.
